School of Dance Gala
The 2018 Gala Concert will bring together amazing talents from the School of Dance Ballet and Modern Dance Programs along with artists from the U’s School of Music. This eclectic program brings traditional pieces, faculty works and new creations to the spectacular Kingsbury Hall Stage. World renowned choreographer and former American Ballet Theatre Principle Artist, Michele Wiles will join her cast to perform her latest choreographic work for the Gala audience. Matthew Neenan, founder of the world class BalletX, will premiere original choreography at Kingsbury, beautifully performed by talented UofU dancers from both the modern dance and ballet programs. The Gala program also features new work by Associate Professor Eric Handman, whose work Galatea Prime will include 5 dancers and 1 flying drone. Assistant Professor Molly Heller will present “The Middle,” which showcases textural projections, “tennis shoe couture costuming,” and an athletic vocabulary that challenges the performers' endurance. The Gala adds a classic touch with a live orchestra performance of Act two of the iconic ballet, Swan Lake, reimagined by Jan Clark Fugit, Adjunct Professor in the School of Dance. The audience will be treated to live music by the University of Utah Philharmonia, conducted by Dr. Robert Baldwin and a performance by guest pianist Dr. Vedrana Subtonic of the School of Music.
